What is the difference between 1 and 2 dimensional waves in Physics and how do

What is the difference between 1 and 2 dimensional waves in Physics?
I have an example of a 1 dimensional wave:
"An example of a wave travelling in one dimension is the motion of either a transverse or longitudinal wave in a slinky, or a transverse wave travelling along a rope. In this case the medium confines the wave to the rope or slinky. The energy of the wave motion has only one dimension in which to travel."
and for a 2 dimensional wave:
"An example of a wave travelling in two dimensions is a transverse wave travelling from a point
source of disturbance in still water. A pebble thrown into a still, flat-bottomed pond will produce
a wave travelling outwards with a circular wavefront away from the initial disturbance."

My question is, in both examples the wave is travelling away from the source of, or initial disturbance, and are both limited to its medium and won't continue outside of its medium; in the first one it is the rope, the second is the ocean. The ocean is not limitless, it is limited just like the rope to the amount of it there is, ie the waves can only travel in the rope as long as there is more of the rope to travel in, and the waves in the ocean can only travel as far as the ocean extends. I don't see how the 2 are different.

Secondly
The rule about waves is that they transfer energy and not matter. I agree with that in invisible waves (eg light, sound, electromagnetic waves) but I don't see how that is true in visible waves (eg water ripples, Slinkys, ropes). Think about the huge waves people surf in. Some go over their heads. The waves in tsunamis bring the physical water (matter) all the way to the shore. It is moving matter. As a slinky move back and forth or as a rope moves up and down, they are physically changing position, matter is moved by the wave. Waves move matter when they move a boat. So why do they say waves 'move energy, not matter' ?
