What is the definition of 'war service' in this context?

I am doing an Honors History project for my first year in high school, and I don't quite understand what it this means by war service. We have to choose a General from the Civil War and describe his life.

4. Explain the war service of the General that you choose.

Does this mean to describe the period of life that the General spent in the war?
