What is the correct usage of "Thank you" in Cantonese given the context?

So in cantonese there are two ways of saying "Thank You'. Do'jeh and M'goi. Can any native speakers of cantonese explain to me the difference in usage. My parents are actually from Hong Kong and are native speakers, but I grew up in Southern California. When I was young, I remember my dad always correcting me when I said "thank you" one way instead of the other. I actually deal with a lot of Cantonese speakers in the industry that I work in right now. I always choose to say "Do'jeh" when saying thank you, only because it sounds more formal. Is it in anyway offensive if I say "thank you" one way over the other given the context of the conversation? Thanks!
