what is the computer in a 98 jeep cherokee located in the overhead light?

my overhead light module fell down, and i noticed a compuer module inside. it does not effect the lights and disconnecting it did not trigger the check engine light...what is it?
it does not have anything to do with the lights. they operate from a different set of wires and operate correctly when the computer is unplugged...
