What is the comparison of flv movies with MP4 or 3gp files? Can flvs be run on TV?

I want to download and store some movies that I can play on Desktop/Laptop/TV/Tablet. In which format should I store them?

In the www.archive.org, many movies have very low sound quality. Is that because of file type? Can I improve the sound quality by any means?
