What is the cause of my weird wireless router behavior?

Just trying to set up a wireless network at home. I have a WGT624 v2 Netgear router. I have already had the broadband modem set up and that works without a hitch when plugged directly into my computer. I attempted to set up a wireless network via the routers configuration page. I did this by having a network cable from my modem to my router and another network cable from my router to my laptop. It was a success. So I unplugged my router to confirm it would work again and I was able to connect to the network but had no internet access. I plugged a network cable back from my router to my laptop and after a few moments had apparently connected via wireless signal. It's working as I type but it seems to me I need to connect the computer every time I want to access it remotely. Not the end of the world but I'd like to know how to stop this odd behavior and just connect normally when it detects the signal?

**To clear things up: My wireless internet works but I need to connect with a cable from my PC to router every time I need to reconnect to the internet wirelessly***

Thanks!
