What is the cause of my 2001 Chevy Impala's power steering failing?

The power steering works fine turning right, but not left. I am so confused. It all started with a little knock and then the wheel would lock up turning left for a second then be normal and now I have no power steering whatsoever turning left. PLEASE HELP!!!!
