What is the burning smell coming from my jeep wrangler?

i went through some mud and got stuck. when i got it out obviuosly there was a lot of mud on it and underneath. after i drove around a little i smelled a burning smell when i got out. maybe it was the mud on the muffler? wut could it be?
Is getting mud all on it bad?
