Proponents for major change in our health care system suggest that a major reason is because there are 45 to 50 million uninsured in the U.S. However, the U.S. Census Bureau breaks the uninsured number down as follows: Of the 45.7 million, 9.7 million are not U.S. citizens; 18.3 million are between the ages of 18 and 34 and many presumably do not need or want health insurance; and 17.5 million uninsured make over $50,000 per year and if they chose, could likely afford a private insurance plan. So, of the 45.7 million uninsured, it is fair to say that the number of U.S. citizens that need and can not afford insurance is much, much less and may be below 1% of the total population. And, that certainly doesn’t mean that even that many don’t have “access”, since most hospitals will treat anyone that walks in the door.

Does that number include people in the U.S. that are on state programs? Hell, we're paying for them already. In my state, it is Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS).
