What is the best way to strip and re-paint a steel gate?

I just bought a gate on EBay and it will need to be stripped back and re-painted to hang outside. Are the chemicals needed really nasty or is it feasable to do it myself?
 
You can buy allot on environmentally friendly stuff out there to clean this gate but you can also rent a mini sand blaster & it will do allot better job with very little mess.
 
you could go to a home improvement store and get a good quality paint & varnish remover(rinse able Type),Follow directions then sand prime and then paint with a good quality oil base enamel
Another option is find a auto body shop or a sand blasting shop and have them remove the old paint sand blasting is better as it will remove all the old paint and scale, It smooths small imperfections also
A sand blasted metal needs to be primed at once
