What is the best way to deal with people who approach you at night in a city?

I started going to school in Pittsburgh last fall, I always thought that the best way to deal with people (who you don't know) who try to talk to you at night was to ignore them and keep walking. However, this past winter some friends and I were walking back to our dorms from a party and a man tried to talk to us. We ignored him and kept walking. He got pretty mad and threw his drink at us and yelled.

I was wondering what the best way to deal with people was when you don't want any trouble and you just want to get home. I'll be living off campus this fall and would really appreciate your input.

There is a fantastic book that could save your life, it is called "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker and it tells how women get killed by thinking they have to be polite. If ANYONE approaches you at night you need to keep walking as fast as you can and forget about being polite, being polite has gotten women killed. Do yourself a favor and get that book.
