what is the best way/or how do try to get a book published?

i had to do a paper for a british lit class and my prof really liked my story and she said that i should try and get it published, i thought i did a good job on it but when i started thinking about it i could turn it into a book, she said i would have to take some parts out of it and add in more details,

so does anybody know anything about this and is it hard to get a book published and is their good money in the long run?
