What is the best type of mattress?

I would think more important than the type of mattress would be the type of pillow that you choose.

I tried a lot of mattresses and I thought a pillowtop would feel good- wrong to soft for me. I went with a beautyrest plush-top. It was soft but not so soft that it didn't support my back. We have regular foam mattresed in our camper ( not temperpedic) and they are amazingly comfortable.

We have a pillow top...but I don't like it... I bought a memory foam topper....love the topper. We will be buying a new mattress this summer....my husband hates the memory foam...he has facet arthritis...and he says the topper makes his back hurt. Me, on the other hand...give me my foam topper. Husband wants to try the nuraber beRAB. I am a little leary of them..but, if they have a return policy, I think we may be trying them.
I love my memory foam pillow...it is the normal pillow shape. No indents/hills or anything..just a regular pillow. Thank goodness for it. Before and after my ACDF I could not get comfortable...until I bought this pillow. LOVE IT.

Good question. I've tried every type of pillow you can. I can't afford to test the mattress thing yet.

I've already tried every pillow out there with no luck. My sleep posture is mostly the cause of my grief as well as overall posture. But a bad mattress can affect the way you lay on it and affect you overall. Ours is over 15 years old anyhow so it is time for a new one.

The spine surgeons tell you to get a semi firm mattress with a pillowtop. I'm still trying to convince my husband I need one. We've only been married for 3years in April and he had a waterbed (couldn't get past the 80's thing) and I had a crappy hard mattress. We bought a softside waterbed (pre surgery) as a comprimise. I couldn't sleep on it at all because it isn't level and caused me much grief. So, I moved into the guest room (honeymoon over ha ha) and have been there for most of the marriage. We have been discussing another new bed but that is as far as it goes. I just bought a temperpedic mattress topper with mattress cover and so far, I don't know if I like it or not. It seems harder yet I know it isn't. I think it will take some getting used to.

As for a pillow...about 8 years ago I found a foam pillow with holes all punched in it. It is soooo wonderful. I still have it today as well. When you lie down, it conforms to your head unlike most pillows. It is like a feather pillow in that it conforms, but it isn't soft and mushy so that you have to punch it to get it right. When you move, it reconforms to your position etc. Mine is starting to lose its plumpness but hey, it has been over 8 years! I still have the other one (for the other side of the bed) and it is still plump as I don't use that one. I have started using it as the pillow on my side/tummy. I am a stomache sleeper so it helps me not to roll onto my tummy. Also, you can't find these at Walmart etc. Bed Bath and Beyond type places would be the best bet on finding one, or even the internet.

Good luck! I know neck pain is also referred to other pains in the body, particularly the bottom part! lol I wish you great success in finding what you are looking for. Beware of the salesmen, they are out to earn a commission, not really help you. Also, I just learned that even if the sign says Sale, you can negotiate the price on mattresses.

Sincerely,
Lisa

I have a Select Comfort and I am telling you it is without a doubt the best mattress I have ever had. I had Tempurpedic and it left me with sore spots.

I need something that is adjustable so that when my back is really, really bad I can dial that mattress in right where I need it.

I really didn't believe that the mattress would help but it does allow my back to rest, even if it is only for a few hours but that is better than nothing. It was so bad with the Tempurpedic I had to literally sleep on the couch as that was more comfortable than the Tempurpedic. Pretty sad for a mattress that cost us over $2K.

While the Select Comfort is pricey, it is worth it. I also got the orthopedic pillows that they recommend and they work wonders as well.

So I would highly recommend the Select Comfort. The other good thing is that if your spouse doesn't need a particularly soft or semi firm mattress they can dial their side to their preference just like you can dial yours. I do find I sleep better on this mattress than any other one out there and I have had quite a few before the Tempurpedic until we finally had to switch and went with Select Comfort.

Best investment I have ever made.

There isn't one type that is best for everyone, it all depenRAB what you personally like best. That's tough because one has to spend alot of money on mattresses. I personally have a King Coil with mattress topper, plus a down mattress top on that, plus a several inch thick memory foam mattress topper on top of all of that! I have a queen sized bed, but use king sized deep pocket sheets. So the mattress itself is firm , but I have layers of softness on top it and can take them off if need be. However, it's never helped to stop some back and neck pains i've had, especially when it's due to nerve pain. As a matter of fact, i have all that b/c when my back first started hurting (in my low back area), I thought maybe it was due to my previous mattress. I wasted all that money on new mattresses and toppers and all sorts of other things and most of the time nothing helped my pains. THat was b/c I had stenosis that was only relieved by surgery. I do find, though, that having the memory foam helps my one shoulder when that acts up. (I usually sleep on my sides). I've also tried many different pillows for neck pain and the only that helps alot is not even really a pillow. I had this buckwheat filled, horseshoe shaped small neck pillow for the car. I was desperate in finding something to lay on and that was my last resort. OMG when I woke up the next morning, I had alot less pain from spasms anyway. I guess it kept my neck in a nice neutral position because it's not too sqooshy.

i don't kn ow when you bought your select comfort...i bought one in 05 i believe and still love it.best bed ever.i bought a second home in 07 and wanted the exact same bed there....it was the worst bed i have ever had...exact same model 2 years apart with completely different opinions.i had it replaced and found it to still be of VERY POOR QUALITY...i returned it for a full refund...WITOUT A DOUBT THE 07 MODEL WAS THE WORST BED I HAVE A EVER OWNED...BUT THE 05 WAS THE BEST...my opinion is that the quality in sel;ect comfort is no longer there.i could not recommend it.
