What is the best, safest way to dispose of old cooking oil? (read further+++)?

I fried some falafel and have about 1-2 cups (about 300-600ml) of waste corn oil. I hear it's bad to pour down the drain because on the way to the water treatment plant but gets stuck in the pipes and clogs them (not sure this is true). I have a regular drain plus a garbage disposal. I have seen people use an empty jar to collect their oil and I suppose they throw this in the trash but I don't know if that's preferred.
