Figure out your budget, go to your local camera store, have a look at what's within your budget, go home and look at reviews of the cameras that you fancied.
http://www.dpreview.com/ is a great website to do this, if your into DSLR cameras that is, if point and shoot is your thing use http://www.cnet.com/ will do you well.
