What is the best murder book to read or the best author?

i love watching the murder programs on the television and decided that i would read a book about them but i was not sure what the best author would be so that it why i decided to put the question to yourselves who may have read a book and feel that it would be a good read for me or that i should get a couple from a certain author thanks
 
The early 'Kay Scarpetta' books by Patricia Cornwell are great, however she literally lost the plot with the later books. try 'Postmortem' and 'Body of Evidence' they are excellent.
 
Phillippa Gregory: The Little House" takes you through the psychological process to the understanding that we are all capable of murder. Brilliant!!

All these authors are wonderful. They mix murder & suspense with romance.
 
My mum likes the James Patterson ones, but I think you can't beat the old classic Sherlock Homes and Agatha Christie books.
