What is the best method to lose weight at the gym?

I need advice on how to gain a slim muscular figure. I'm not aiming for a bodybuilder's body. Right now I have a gut but I'm not huge. Do I try to lose the gut first by doing cardio at the gym then once the gut is gone I build the muscle? Or do I lose the gut while building the muscle at the same time? I ask this because I hear to lose fat I need to have a low calorie diet and to build muscle I need to have a slightly above average calorie intake diet. Also, what are some exercises or routines to reach my goal?
