What is the best media player?

What is the best media player where I can capture videos from a DVD? I was wondering if that's even possible, I want to capture a part of a movie for my project. Can I capture it using a media player?
Is there any way I can capture a video?

Well.... you don't use a media player for that. You copy the dvd on your hard drive and cut what you want out of it with Proshow or just with Windows Movie Maker... for players... the BEST media player is VLC it will play virtually anything without additional codecs. For dvd format playing on pc/laptop use PowerDVD
