Evaluation Points for "Best"
- Most be capable of indexing documents across network shares (= just a local indexer/desktop search disqualifies)
- Amount of Data Volume that can be handled by the Solution (# documents, index size etc.)
- The number of supported document formats able to index
- Indexing performance/overhead (ability to run indexer on different machine in the network)
- centralized DB/search index storage (one index within the network versus local indexes for each machine)
- Flexibility of controlling what gets indexed and what does not
- Search interface options, advanced filters (e.g. only search specific type of documents versus everything)
- Price of the solution and 3rd party software requirements (e.g optional support for MS SQL Server or SQL Server required etc.)
- Hardware requirements (Index server/DB, search interface, Crawler/Indexer)
- Email indexing support. MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail. Open client required for indexing or not?
- Document meta tags support? e.g. ID3 tags of MP3 files, EXIF, IPTC, RIFF INFO, IDivX, MovieID, MS Office Meta Data, PDF Meta, WMP Tags etc.
