I recently bought a Nikon d60 dslr camera with a 18-55mm Nikkor lens. I'm new to the "advanced" photography world and want to figure out what type of lens would be best for taking pictures from far away and at close range. If I get a zoom lens, say a 18-200 mm, its my understanding that this a more versatile lens giving me the ability to take pictures at a normal range and then being able zoom into an object around 10x magnification. On the other hand I haven't been able to grasp what a telephoto lens does. Maybe because some of the things I've read and heard interchange zoom and telephoto. Is a telephoto lens fixed at a specified magnification in that it does not have the ability to pictures of objects at close range and would therefore not be a versatile lens? Basically what I want to figure out is which type of lens acts most like a normal digital camera in that I can zoom in and out and take a range of photos. Also, is vibration reduction important for all around photography?
