what is the best kind of pedals to ride on my road bike?

As long as you can deal with needing special shoes clip-ons have all of the advantages. You have more control over the pedal stroke and properly adjusted they are less likely to trap your feet than straps (or baskets).

The lightest clips-ons are the best, but even the heavy ones are lighter than other pedals.

If you need to ride without special shoes, at times, there are some models that have clip-ons on one side and a normal pedal on the other. Somewhat heavy but very convenient.

I prefer SPD (like the ones used on MTB bikes).
The shoes are walkable and with the 2 sided version, clipping is very straightforward.
