What is the best format for videos to be burned onto a blank DVD?

I want to burn episodes from Youtube converted into video onto a DVD. What is the best video format for burning onto DVDs? The last time I tried it, the formats was .MPEG format. The videos wouldn't play all the way through. When I would go to the menu, it wouldn't let me select the videos that I wanted to play. What video format is proper for the DVD burning?
