What is the best / easiest way to get into the music industry?

I was in the military music program for a while. Then I went to college for accounting. I'd really like to get into music, but I don't know where to start. I live in Los Angeles, so what do you recommend for getting into the music scene?
I currently have a full-time job as an auditor, but I am afraid to quit because I have to make money to pay my bills.
