What is the best dog breed for a single female living alone?

Small house/apartment.
Exercise- regular, but not "jogging partner"
Needs to
- not shed a lot/at all (a little can be alright)
- Be able to protect if necessary
- Not too active indoors ( I know some breeds that are active, but calm indoors)
- size not an issue.

Please please please recommend dogs of any sizes, and describe them a little.
