I have a B.C. Rich Warlock (Mick Thompson Signature Edition) and a plain Hondo brand amplifier (looks like this amp below

The amp I have has a volume knob, a tone knob and a drive switch (on/off). Whenever I turn the drive on, the distortion sounds horrible. So I bought a Digitech Death Metal distortion pedal today. It sounds decent, but I'm not too fond of the tone.
Would the guitar amp also have a factor to play in this too? I'm looking for a good pedal that has a nice distortion tone (similar to Slipknot or other metal bands). Basically the distortion on the Digitech pedal doesn't sound as "clean" or "crunchy" as I want it to be. Maybe I just have the knobs set to the wrong positions? It has a level knob (controls both guitar input and gain level) and a 3-band EQ (bass, mid and treble).
Can somebody help me with this?
