What is the best camera to purchase for someone turning photography into more than a hobby?

I really love taking photographs of family and friends and have had people ask me to take photos for them, however all I have now is a point and shoot camera. I am looking to step it up. I know a digital SLR is best, but what type?

We cannot tell you what type of Digital SLR is best. Stick with Canon or Nikon but only you can decide which one fits best in your hand. No matter which brand you do choose, they'll get you to where you want to head towards.

For beginner to Digital SLR camera I would suggest Nikon D3000 or CAnon Rebel XS which not too expensive and provide great images.But if you want better one Nikon D90 is a great camera to get.
