My boyfriend got his Marin Bobcat Trail bike stolen and is really upset, his birthday is coming up and I want to buy him one. I have no idea what makes a good mountain bike. Please help with suggestions of what to look for and where to find a good affordable bike. Thanks!

also what are important characteristics for a good mountain bike?

My mate has a "GIANT" mountain bike it looks like a smooth ride i've rode on it before and i loved it! I prefer BMX but i still reacon Mountain Bikes are still pretty good, i suggest getting a GIANT but the only thing is they are pretty expensive.

Sorry if i didn't help.

I have a Ironhorse Yakuza Champira, and it was $500, but it is an amazing bike. There are somethings you may want to upgrade, but otherwise, it is a good bike.

depends on how much you want to spend. here are some basics, bikes from the previous year will be cheaper. you usually have 2 options in mountain bikes, hardtail and dual suspension, hardtails do not have a rear suspension, therefore, will USUALLY be a lot cheaper than dualies, however, a really good hardtail (carbon frame) will cost a lot more than regular dualies.

here are a couple bikes off the top my head:
specialized rockhopper
specialized hardrock
trek 4500
iron horse scotch.

there are a lot of other brands to check out as well such as giant or kona, these brands are not specialty brands, therefore will cost cheaper than santa cruz, merlin ect. hope that helped.

PS: DO NOT BUY FROM WALMART/TARGET ect. go to a reputable bike shop.
