It depends completely on where you live. You can fetch a good price in a metropolitan area....but you need to have a good portfolio and a good track record. Working in a smaller area means way less money.
Also, don't expect a salary, per se. You'll most likely be contract based, so ask like 50/hr to start. A well established design shop near me gets 300/hr, but they've been going for a long time.
