And I don't mean like $0.25 per book SOLD, I mean like as a starter fee. I've heard it called a "royalty check" or an "advance". My parents (who have no experience in publishing) say that most likely it is around $2,000.

I am getting ready to publish a book, so I was just wondering what to expect. Thank you anyone who answers!
Thank you very much everyone who answered I no longer need any answers but everyone helped out a lot! =]

it's called an advance.
a royalty is what you get, based on sales, after the book is published.

most often, nothing.
in fact, there are quite a number of folks that have to pay to get their books published.
far more have to pay, than get an advance.

if you're not already a successfully published author, or it's not obvious to the publisher that they will be able to sell enough books to make a profit, then you will not receive any advance.

sorry.
