what is reasion behind war between usa v/s vaitanam?

Vietnam was a French colony. We had to bail them out (again) when they couldn't handle a communist insurgency. The war became part of the Cold War struggle between Russia and US over political ideology. The US wanted to stop the spread of communism, so they defended the South, whose government, unfortunately, happened to be corrupt to the core. If Ho Chi Minh had declared himself a capitalist, the US would probably never have gotten involved.
