What is on the face of some of the people in Burma (Myanmar)?

Since the cyclone in Burma (Myanmar), a lot of the pictures I have seen show people with a light coloured substance on their faces. Have a look at some photos on the web, the BBC have quite a few, to see what I mean.

Does anybody know what it is, and what it's used for?
