What is my Honda civic's 2001 problem?

I have a honda civic lx 2001 1.7L automatic,lately the car runs but does not change the speed in time and now sometimes it stops running and switches off by itself. I have to switch on the car and sometimes it does not start running when I shift it in to D .
someone said it is the transmission what is the problem?
