...singing, acting) and sciences? sciences being physics, biology, and chemistry

basic instincts being food, sex, and survival
n d: you do know that NO ONE cares about the so called higher needs before the lower needs have been fulfilled... if you read maslow's hierarchy of needs carefully you will realize that the so called lower needs are actually the more vital/important needs.
some people can't handle LIFE they go to UNIVERSITY
try going without sex/masturbation for more than 2 weeks...you'll realize it's a need soon enough...way more so than an education where other people tell you what they have learned.
how many times are you going to use 'there is more than eating and pooping to life' as a crutch? You can go without a book for a week, try going without pooping for a week.

In my point of view, both are equally important. But since you want me to pick only one, I'll choose basic instincts. One can live without arts and sciences, but not without basic instincts. I mean, it's there inside every single individual, right? You'll die without eating and that's for sure. But that doesn't mean arts and sciences and education isn't important. In this era of globalization, it is very vital. For me, I can live without sex, but not without education. It has always been my top priority.

Now its time for you to check out Maslow's HEIRARCHY OF NEEDS.
Higher education, artisitic expression, are higher needs. Eating and pooping are lower needs... Believe it or not *some* people have higher needs beyond eating and pooping to fulfill.

Some people are naturally more intelligent, more curious, than others. Their artistic endeavors are a way for them to search for meaning. The more education you get the more you realise how little it is you really DO know about the world around you.

Sex isn't a "need". You can live without sex. But living without education, to me, isn't "living" at all.

*Its always the uneducated people who say silly things like that. You never hear educated people complaining their education was a mistake. You can lose everything, your home, your family, your job, your possessions... but your education (using that term in a broader sense) is with you all your life, it will never betray you and you will take it with you to the grave. There is more than eating and pooping to life. A LOT more.

Once the basic needs are satisfied, we need the other things to make our lives meaningful. Even at the most primitive level, people invent music, dance, art, storytelling etc.

And as regards sex, at my age dear I can go two weeks or longer without sex or masturbation quite happily, but I can't go more than two hours without reading something.

=O I wouldn't be able to live without the arts (literature, painting, singing, acting, dancing) even science is so fascinating to me.
What is with your questions?! Education or sex? If you want to be a dumba--, getting back to your 'natural instincts', then go right ahead, but don't chastise others for appreciating the beauty of human abilities. Also if for you it's one or the other, how horrible for you. Luckily many can have both. But I'm so sick and tired of people, who dropped out of high school, or decided not to go to uni, or didn't get good grades, telling me how pointless education is and just how smart they really are. Also think about it, you choose sex over science. What happens if =O You can't get it up.. you need viagra but lo and behold viagra hasn't been invented. So... now you're screwed and not in a good way ;-)
