I'm starting my A levels in September and when I finish them I plan on studying further at Manchester university.

So my questions is; what exactly is Manchester like? What are your opinions of Manchester? Are the people nice? What's the atmosphere like? Do you recommend me studying at Manchester unversity...

I chose yahoo answers for this question because I want to know peoples opinions who live or have been there...

Please give me as much information on Manchester as possible please.. Many thanks!

I am prone to lengthy answers, but am a bit tired on a Monday night. I can recommend the wikitravel Manchester site, as full of insider info.
We are so lucky and so very handy for other cities- Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Liverpool, Chester,Preston-- ALL under an hour away. Great countryside is on the door step too, in The Peak District. North Wales, North Yorks. Moors, The Lake District are all within 1-2 hours from the city also. If you do get stir crazy, in the city, you can escape, on the bus or train, to Cheshire and such as the delights of Tatton Park, just a few miles south of the conurbation.
The city of Manchester is an odd shape, as you will see on a map. It lies at the heart of the vast urban area that is Greater Manchester (sometimes now also called the Manchester City Region). It is a great happening place. The people are fine. Some, who live in the student areas, do whinge about them at times! Commuters, on the Oxford Road corridor complain too about all the students getting on and off the buses, and long for the Summer, but they are just having a moan! Who knows, you may even end up doing what so many students, studying here do; staying and settling in the area!
As a student at Man Univ. you are likely to live in a bit of a South Manchester bubble. From some close to me, I know you do have to take care, in some student house shares, as these are targeted at times. As long as you take normal precautions you will be fine. Don't flaunt the laptops and phones etc..... Make sure you get the chance to see some other parts of the region in between lectures, and drinking ! Good luck. Hope you are happy here !

Manchester is perhaps better than a lot of media coverage says it is. It has had a lot of investment and the city centre is growing at an enormous rate. It is quite cosmopolitan with students from all over populating the university campus. There is a quite a buzz, and most people feel safe and free to have a good time in the many shops, music and entertainment centres, eating establishments and of course the giant "eye". I have lived here all my life and the city itself has improved over time. The river and canal run right through it and these have been revamped recently - as have the trams. Man Uni itself is famed for being the birthplace of the computer. Although the Americans like to think Steve Jobs and Bill Gates did it - in fact ALAN TURING laid the groundwork and his name is preserved on one of the local roads.
Having said that - there are a lot of low IQ nutters and drug takers/vagrants - but odds on they will be more amusing than threatening.
