What is Locking?

hi guys. though i use my Nokia 6600 since march, i've come across many sites or forums who tell abt Locking or rather Unlocking the phone..
and i really have no idea what that means..
can any1 help me regarding this?

You've got me on this one, it could mean locking your phone yo your sim so if its stolen the phones useless but im not sure!

Like, keylock? Unlocking means only your phone will only accept "PROVIDER" cell phones.
