an annular tear is the very beginning of a possible herniated disc, where the outer surface of the disc rips some, it is painful, but can heal---from what I've read along the way. don't quote me lol

L5-S1 is the disc between these 2 vetebraes in your lower lurabar spine.

I have alot of tears. From what my dr has told me is the only way tears can be "taken care of" is a procedure they do when they insert a wire and it goes around the disc and then they heat it and it repairs the tears. Not all insurances cover this, as mine did not, bc not enuf studies have been done on it to show it works. So its considered "experimental". Great, huh?

Lost70 is correct however you also have other options they are just more involved. I had an annular tear at L4/L5 mine never healed on it's own. I first checked to see if I qualified for a disc replacment (artifical) but I had too much arthritis. So my only option was to have a fusion. I just had mine done Feb 9th and I feel pretty good. Walking two miles a day and yes I do have pain but it's not the same burning pain that you know what I am talking about it's different and is lessening with each day that is passing.

Good luck to you and the best advice I can give you is don't just go to one doctor. Get two/three even four opinions. It's your back and it's important for you to feel better to have the right process done.
