What is it with these Sprint data plans?

Okay so I am starting to look at phones again because I am about ready for an upgrade, I really only want it if it has a touch screen because that is what I am used to but I could downgrade if I really liked the phone. I am just really frustrated at the fact that all these phones require a data plan! I don't need a data plan all I need is a texting plan. Is there any good phones out there that don't require data plans? I currently have a Palm Centro and I don't have a data plan I actually even have the internet blocked funny enough. Also I was wondering if I were to buy a phone like used over the internet on craigslist or a local sale site could I buy say the Instinct HD and have it activated without a data plan? I know this is allot of questions but I really need your help Thanks so much.
 
I feel your pain because I'm with sprint now. if you can switch get the nexus one by tmobile right now. look it up. this phone is killing the htc hero and the iphone. anyway if you want to stay with spring then you can get another phone from the internet and would not need a data plan. I'M LIKE YOU...I HAVE NO IDEA WHY YOU ARE FORCED TO HAVE A DATA PLAN IF YOU DO NOT WANT ONE.
