What is it called when an author uses...?

What is it called when an author uses a third "thing" to bring two characters together. It kind of acts as a buffer and a reason to bring the two characters together.
For example, in a short story:
A boy likes this girl. He draws pictures of her in his notebook (creepy, i know). She sees the notebook and they start to talk. The notebook is the third "thing" that brings the two main "things" together..
does that literary technique have a name?

it's called a "meet cute." i actually know this from watching "the holiday" multiple times. it is the scenario in which two potential romantic partners meet for the first time through unusual/comic circumstances. a meet cute can also be defined as, "in romantic comedies, the moment when the destined-to-fall-in-love couple meets for the first time, typically in ironic or unexpected fashion."
