What Is Good Program For Creating CGI?

I am planing on creating an independent film in about a year or so, which will include an alien life form. I need to know what is a good program for creating CGIs. I am going to need it to move and perfrom actions. Im not looking for programs for creating images. Ive heard good things about Poser but what other programs are there and how good is Poser? Also I am very new at computer graphics programing so can anyone please refer me to some good knowledge and tutorial websites? Thanks.
 
you could as the other poster said use blender, which is free.

You could also use Maya or 3ds Max, you can get a version of Maya called "Maya PLE" which stands for personal learning edition, which is free.

Also if you want a good program to start modelling your alien life form then use Autodesk Mudbox, such a brilliant and easy to use program, google it and see for yourself.
