I've searched the web for a diagnosis and come up blank. The symptoms are follows:
When I extend my right arm to the side I feel a very sharp pain in my thumb. It is as if I have been stabbed with a large bore needle, sharp blade and there is also the suggestion of electrical shock. It is quite painful. It is a short pain but afterwards, for perhaps an hour, my arm aches up to the elbow. There is always a low level dull ache in the thumb. The pain is not in the joint but in the inner side of the thumb. The pain only occurs when I straighten my arm to the side. It does not have to be completely straight but does not happen if I straighten my arm to the front.
I suspect it is some form of nerve damage - a cumulative stress injury. As a craftsman I have been using my right hand to do quite a bit of intense work for decades. Tasks such as screwdriver work, twisting small nuts, bending my arm into awkward positions and repeated, prolonged manipulation of a trade tool with outstretched arm.
I have ruled out Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as there is no numbness or loss of strength. I have also ruled out DeQuervain’s Syndrome and Arthritis as well.
I am on no medications, have never broken this arm although I seem to remember spraining the wrist many years ago. I suffer from Ramsay - Hunt Syndrome and it affected my right side although I am approx. 90% recovered.
