What is BOOTLOADER and CUSTOM ROM???

I am thinking to purchase a Motorola ATRIX 4G and I was reading the issues about locked Bootloader and not being able to use custom rom.

Could someone explain to me in plain English what that means?

What exactly can I NOT install on it?
Will I be able to install all applets that I have been using for so long?

I have been using HTC Desire for about 2 years now and I want to get one of the new ones in the market.
I liked Motorola ATRIX, because of the size, the internal memory and the battery life.

I would appreciate any comments!

you'd need to get it rooted first.

if your phone has locked bootloader then you can there is a workaround called "2nd-init", after you do that you can install an app for custom recovery (basically you can back up or restore roms from memory card).

you should ask yourself what it is that you're trying to change on the phone, if you not even bought it yet! because it's very possible to brick it in the process if you don't follow the instructions.

more here: xda developers, they will no doubt have all the stickies on rooting / custom rom & what not if you look in the section for your phone.

another thing is to get latest "RSD Lite" & the drivers for PC. then you can flash full firmware (.sbf file) if you brick it.
