What is biking (bicycle not motorbike) like in Los Angeles?

Is biking a viable and good method of transportation for someone living in the Los Angeles/Hollywood/West Hollywood + Beverly Hills part of California? Is it safe? Is there easy access? Are there bike routes along side the road? Are drivers respectful enough to share the road?
