What is another word for fling (as in a casual try or involvement), but is not casual?

I'm going to try a diet for a month, but only for a month. So it is a fling, but it isn't casual. What is the word for this brief but entirely committed...fl
the word I'm looking for doesn't necessarily describe a type of diet. It's the word for the concept of doing something committedly for a set period of time.
