What is an RCA Pre-out and what does it mean?

All head unit specifications outline a certain number of RCA Pre-outs in the unit. I need to know what exactly that means!
I need to connect an amp, front splits and back 6 inch speakers to my head unit, how many RCA Pre-outs do I require?
