What is a Preliminary Hearing/Pre-Trial Confrence?

I Got a Letter in the Mail for Missing lots of School Days saying i have a Court date set and that the court only wants me not my Parents to Attend what exactly does this mean do i need a Lawyer?
 
If you are a minor (under 18) only your parents may engage legal representation for you - if you are an adult - then you may engage legal help if you can pay for it. If you are indigent (have no visible means of support) you can ask for a public defender.
