what is a Pickup System with Active On-Board Pre-Amp ?

I getting a fender guitar for my kid a ( cd-110ce cutaway, black, nato back and sides, spruce top fishman preamp/pickup system ), but a not shure what this feature is or what douse it do , can same one help, please
