What is a PCM? need a rebuilt transmission, for a 2002 Honda Odyssey 161,000 doesn;t

PCM = power train control module technically.
If the one you have is still good, no you do not require one, if it is dead, yes you do. Now no dealership is going to do a job like that w/out changing everything for new, why ? because if the pcm goes in the first 100 miles, they have to take everything apart again.
 
shift smooth from 30mph.? I was quoted $3000 for a rebuilt without a PCM. Honda dealer is $4400 with the PCM. Why would the mechanic say it isn't needed when Honda says it does. Who should we listen to? We want to keep the car a little longer, good car.
