What is a more reliable car? Mazda 3? Scion XD ? Mitsubishi Lancer DE?

I'm looking for a new car that will be mechanically sound for at least 5 years and retain a good resale value later on. The car needs to have EXCELLENT gas mileage, in other words, a gas saver. I am open to other suggestions of other makes or model but it needs to stay within the range of $13,000 to $17,000.
 
The Scion xD is built by Toyota and therefore the best out of the 3. Mazdas are good cars as well, but not as good as Toyota. Mitsubishis are not known for being reliable.
