I have a slipped disc in my lower back. I am going to a chiropractor to get it straightened out, but it will take a while before the muscles in my back stop hurting. I already do leg presses in my routine, but squats help develop my hips and quads better. They also help my overall strength.
I already do leg curls, extensions, and calf raises. These are only isolation exercises. They don't hit the entire leg all at once like squats. I also tried using a chair, but the thing is that it doesn't provide for a deep enough squat toget the groin area and the leg sweeps.
