What is a good shutter speed to use for taking photos of animals at the zoo?

I want to photograph lions and tigers at the zoo, what is a good shutter speed for me to use on a sunny day? what about in shade? should i jack up the ISO to 400 if the animal is in the shade to keep my shutter speed over 250?
